Commemorating Fair Housing Month: A Collective Commitment

Updated: Apr 9, 2024

Fair Housing

Every April, communities across the nation come together to celebrate Fair Housing Month. This year marks the 56th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act of 1968, a landmark civil rights law that prohibits discrimination in housing based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation), disability, and familial status.

The Fair Housing Act was a pivotal moment in the fight for equal access to housing. Prior to its passage, many individuals and families faced discrimination when trying to rent or buy a home. The Act helped dismantle these discriminatory practices and pave the way for a more inclusive housing market.

The Fight Continues: Recognizing Modern Challenges

While significant progress has been made since the Fair Housing Act, housing discrimination persists in subtle ways. This might involve practices like racial steering, where potential buyers are directed toward certain neighborhoods based on their race or ethnicity. Unequal access to mortgage loans and unfair pricing can also be forms of housing discrimination.

Real estate professionals play a crucial role in upholding fair housing principles. By staying informed about fair housing laws and best practices, they can ensure fair and ethical treatment for all clients.

Building Inclusive Communities: How We Can All Contribute

Fair Housing Month serves as a powerful reminder that creating a truly equitable housing landscape requires a collective effort. Here are some ways we can contribute:

  • Educate Yourself: Familiarize yourself with fair housing laws and practices. Resources from organizations like the National Association of Realtors (NAR) can provide valuable information.

  • Speak Up: If you witness or experience potential housing discrimination, report it to the appropriate authorities. Your voice can make a difference.

  • Support Fair Housing Initiatives: Many organizations work towards promoting fair housing. Consider volunteering your time or donating to these causes.

What else can REALTORS do to support Fair Housing?

Access material from The National Association of REALTORS (NAR) to show your commitment to Fair Housing Month. Together, we can create a housing market where everyone can find a place they can call home.
